Last 22 August 2024, Gleneagles JPMC has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing its first-ever procedure using the Impella device, a groundbreaking advancement in cardiac care.
Often referred to as the world’s smallest heart pump, the Impella device provides critical support to patients with severe heart conditions by maintaining blood flow during high-risk procedures, ensuring that the heart continues to function effectively while doctors work to address underlying issues.
The procedure was conducted and led by Dr. Billal Patel, Head of Interventional Cardiology at Gleneagles JPMC, alongside Dr. Rajinikanth Rajagopal, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Gleneagles JPMC and Dr. Muhd Ezam Emran, Consultant Cardiologist at Department of Cardiology, RIPAS Hospital.
“This patient had to undergo a complex cardiac procedure. In his case, the risks were high as the patient already had weak and damaged heart muscles. With the help of the Impella device, the patient’s heart function was supported throughout, and we were able to complete the cardiac procedure successfully. The Impella device gives treating doctors’ confidence to perform complex cases such as this one,” said Dr. Billal Patel, Head of Interventional Cardiology at Gleneagles JPMC.
Dr Billal also highlighted that for a complex set of patients facing severe coronary disease and are not fit for open heart surgery, the Impella device has become a critical tool in supporting the success of the procedure.
“The device has been in the global market for some time now but has only entered the Southeast Asia market recently, bringing new hope for the patients who needs it in this region. The availability of the Impella device in Gleneagles JPMC is a testament for us to continuously cater for better cardiac services with state-of-the-art technology for our patients”, he added. The patient is now on the road to recovery, and the success of this procedure sets a promising precedent for future cases requiring similar interventions.
