Pg Dr Md Nadzir bin Pg Mohd Juanda
Deputy Director of Cardiac SurgeryPg Dr. Nadzir is currently the Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Gleneagles JPMC. He entered Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in 2005 in the first cohort of the Institute of Medicine double-degree medical program and attained his first degree in Bachelor of Health Science in 2008 where he was then awarded the Government of Brunei scholarship to complete his medical training in Canada.
In 2011, he received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Calgary before moving to Ottawa for his specialist training in cardiac surgery. He also rotated through Cardiology and Thoracic and Vascular Surgery before being appointed the Chief Resident at the Division of Cardiac Surgery in 2017. In 2018, he successfully completed his training as a certified cardiac surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the largest dedicated cardiac centre in Canada. Throughout his training, he had obtained clinical and surgical experience in various cardiac centres in Canada, USA and the UK.
He started off as an Associate Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Gleneagles JPMC in 2018 and has been the President of Cardiac Society Brunei Darussalam since September 2022. He is currently a council member of the Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia, ASEAN Federation of Cardiology and Asia-Pacific Society of Cardiology. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and American College of Surgeons. He also holds several other fellowship with the ASEAN Federation of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology and American College of Cardiology. In early 2024, he completed the Harvard Medical School’s postgraduate program of Leadership in Medicine: Southeast Asia with distinction and achieved the Top 10 Best Capstone Project out of over 70 students. His special interests include teaching medical students and junior doctors or surgeons, heart-related clinical and education research, critical cardiac care medicine, cardiac resuscitation, advanced heart failure management using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and other mechanical support therapy as well as innovating minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Brunei.
Despite the demanding nature of his career, Dr. Nadzir places a high value on family and personal well-being as family provides a crucial emotional anchor, offering stability and comfort. To maintain a work-life balance, Dr. Nadzir engages in fitness activities such as running and swimming, besides greatly enjoying travelling and food from various cuisines.
