Senior Consultant Interventional CardiologistDr. Paula Mota brings more than 20 years of expertise in Interventional Cardiology, performing over 5000 coronary interventions. Initially as Senior Consultant Cardiologist and later as Director of Interventional Cardiology at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust in Kent, UK, Dr. Mota introduced advanced techniques such as rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy, propelling the hospital to become the largest centre by PCI volume in Southeast England by 2020, performing over 1600 coronary interventions annually.
As one of the busiest heart attack centres in the UK, the hospital received nearly 1000 primary PCI calls annually, where Dr. Mota played a pivotal role in her responsibilities, thus extending beyond clinical practice by overseeing audits, governance and improvement initiatives. Her proactive approaches included close collaboration with ambulance crews, providing invaluable education on identifying and treating patients with heart attacks. In addition to coronary interventions, Dr. Mota is accredited to perform renal denervation in treating arterial hypertension. Her commitment to staying at the forefront of cardiac imaging technologies is evident through her proficiency in CT Coronary Angiography, where this has been recently expanded into Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), through rigorous training at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London in 2023.
Beyond Coronary Artery Disease, Dr. Mota’s clinic addresses various cardiac conditions, including hypertension, heart failure, valve disease, and atrial fibrillation, underscoring her comprehensive expertise in cardiovascular medicine. Her multifaceted skill set, coupled with a passion for teaching and mentorship, positions her as a well-respected physician in the realm of interventional cardiology and cardiovascular medicine.
In 2020, Dr. Mota finally joined Gleneagles JPMC as an Interventional Cardiologist in October, where she began with regularly reporting cardiac CT Angiography and MRI scans. At present, she is leading a national initiative on behalf of the hospital in implementing a heart attack pathway for Brunei.
